Rockstar has said GTA 6’s map is twice the size of GTA 5’s and three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, but it still hasn’t given an official area in square kilometres. This page puts every Grand Theft Auto map and RDR2 beside Leonida at one shared scale, then shows the available figures and explains where each one comes from, how it was calculated, and how much confidence to put in it.
Scale: YANIS community map V13, the site’s own Leonida basemap: its printed scale bar measures 500 px per km on the 10,000 px master, so 1 unit is 1 m. Land figure: land derived from Rockstar’s ratio.
Open the Leonida interactive map →Every map as a multiple of GTA 5’s total area, water included, with the figure printed at the end of each bar. Outlines are ratios or ranges, not measurements.
Bars are multiples of GTA 5’s 75.84 km² total. Lighter segments are water. GTA 6 is drawn from Rockstar’s ratio, not from a measurement, and RDR2 is drawn as the spread of its published figures. Community measurements of GTA 6 are land-only, so they appear on the Land view.
Every GTA figure before GTA 6 is community-reported, from the KeWiS measurement series. Lighter bands are water. GTA 6 is drawn from Rockstar’s ratio, so its outline is a derived area, not a measurement. RDR2 is drawn as the spread of its published figures.
Sides scale with the square root of area, so a square with twice the area is 1.41 times as wide. Read the numbers, not the edges. Dashed outlines are ratios or ranges.
Every GTA game before GTA 6 comes from one measurement series, so the ratios between them are comparable. GTA 6 and RDR2 do not, so their rows carry ranges and labels instead of one figure.
A widely copied figure puts GTA 5 at 49 sq mi, or 127 km². The two numbers agree with each other (49 x 2.59 = 126.9) but no published method produces either one. The only measurement with a stated method, the GTAForums series above, gives 75.84 km² including water, or 29.28 sq mi.
The two measurements disagree by about 42 km². The mapping project says the leaked image was measured at the wrong scale. The Reddit measurement treats the leaked map as complete. Neither can be checked against a Rockstar scale bar, so both stay community-reported and the page shows the range instead of picking one. The derived land figure sits inside that range, which is the one point where the official ratio and the community work agree.
DATA · GTATRACKER.GGThese are boxes around the maps, not the maps. We publish them to show why map size depends on where you draw the edge, and to show that the community Leonida map, read at its printed scale, is consistent with the mapping project’s land figure and with Rockstar’s 2x statement.
DATA · GTATRACKER.GGRockstar still hasn’t put an official square-kilometre or square-mile figure on the GTA 6 map. The studio has talked about scale instead, with the most specific comparisons coming from the press and creator preview that went public on 27 August 2026 alongside the Extended Look.
Rob Nelson of Rockstar North gave the clearest version in comments relayed by YouTuber TGG on X:
The map is twice the size of GTAV and three times that of the playable area of RDR2. The city itself is twice as big as Los Santos, but also, the built-up area outside Vice City is eleven times the built-up area outside of Los Santos in GTAV.
The New York Times separately got the same RDR2 comparison from Rockstar. Its preview, quoted by Game File, says GTA 6's full map "is three times as large as the playable area of its previous game, Red Dead Redemption 2".
Rockstar's own public copy remains less precise. The Extended Look post describes GTA 6 as "the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet", repeating wording from the Trailer 1 post published in December 2023. The Extended Look showed named locations and regions, but Rockstar didn't display a complete map or attach dimensions to it.
The "twice the size of GTA 5" comparison leaves one important detail unresolved. Rockstar never specified whether Nelson meant GTA 5's complete mapped area or its land alone. Doubling the 75.84 km² total produces 151.68 km². Doubling the 48.15 km² land figure produces 96.3 km². Both calculations appear here with their formulas, and neither is presented as a measured GTA 6 area.
Community attempts to measure Leonida currently produce two different answers.
The GTA VI Vice City and Leonida State Mapping Project, responsible for many of the detailed GTA 6 map reconstructions online, estimates roughly 125 km² of land. By its numbers, Leonida has around 2.5 times as much land as GTA 5.
Another estimate came from measuring a full-map image leaked in August 2026. Vice reported on 25 August 2026 that the calculation produced 83.218 km² of explorable land, equal to 1.69 times the GTA 5 baseline of 49.314 km² used for that comparison. The mapping project disputes the result and says the leaked image was measured at the wrong scale. Vice also cautions that its numbers aren't official and that the image itself could represent an older build.
There is no Rockstar scale bar available to settle the disagreement. For that reason, both estimates remain identified as community-reported here, with the gap between them left visible rather than collapsed into a single number.
The Leonida image used in the Map Lab and the true-scale comparison strip is YANIS community map version 13, which also supplies the site's interactive Leonida map. Its native image includes a scale of 1000 pixels per kilometre, providing the basis for placing it beside maps from the older games.
A bounding box around the YANIS landmass comes to roughly 13.0 by 18.7 km. Taking a little more than half of that box as land gets close to the mapping project's 125 km² estimate. GTA 5's measured 48.15 km² of land doubled is about 96 km², so Rockstar's 2x comparison and the community reconstruction don't produce wildly incompatible scales.
That agreement is only a cross-check. It doesn't turn the 125 km² estimate into an official measurement.
Most of the GTA map-area figures still circulating online can be traced to one GTAForums project. User KeWiS measured the in-game maps for GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, GTA IV, and GTA 5 against known scales, then published separate figures for total area, land, and water in a thread titled The most accurate GTA map comparison ever.
Using one methodology across five games is useful here because the relative differences remain meaningful even if the absolute figures aren't perfect.
Map placement on this page uses each game's known coordinate range where possible. GTA III and Vice City draw their radar across a 4 km square according to the re3 decompilation. San Andreas spans a 6 km square. GTA 5 uses the transform calibrated for this site's own map importer.
GTA IV needs different treatment because the available map artwork consists of crops without confirmed outer bounds. Its image is therefore scaled until the land area matches the published 8.06 km² measurement. That placement remains labelled derived until reliable image bounds turn up.
GTA 5 also has one persistent number that needs separating from the measured data. A claim repeated for years gives the map an area of 49 square miles, or about 127 km². The conversion works, since 49 multiplied by 2.59 gives 126.9, but there is no published measurement method behind the original figure. Versions of the claim were already circulating in forum posts before GTA 5 launched in 2013.
The KeWiS measurement, by comparison, provides a method and puts GTA 5 at 75.84 km² including water.
Rockstar made its own scale comparison before release. Game Informer was told that GTA 5 was larger than GTA IV, San Andreas, and Red Dead Redemption combined, a claim NBC News reported in September 2013. No underlying arithmetic accompanied that statement, so it is treated here as a marketing comparison rather than a numerical measurement.
Rockstar's claim that GTA 6 covers three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't converted into a GTA 6 area here. Published attempts to measure RDR2 are too far apart to make that calculation defensible.
One 2026 measurement based on footage puts RDR2's explorable land at about 35.9 km². A separate Reddit analysis from 2018 gives 29 square miles, although no measurement method was published for that figure. Those estimates differ by roughly a factor of two.
Rockstar's own web map places the RDR2 map frame at 12.29 by 9.73 km. Reaching the larger published estimate would require almost two thirds of that rectangular frame to count as land, which doesn't line up with the geography visible on the map.
RDR2 is therefore shown as a range rather than a single accepted area. Its map artwork comes from Rockstar's web-map tiles and uses that 12.29 by 9.73 km frame.
Two GTA 5 figures shown here come from this site's mapping tools rather than an outside source.
The importer used by the interactive Los Santos map positions markers with a transform of 0.66304 pixels per metre horizontally and 0.656 pixels per metre vertically on the 8192-pixel atlas. Applied across the full image, those values produce dimensions of about 12.36 by 12.49 km, equal to 154.3 km². Most of that rectangle is ocean rather than playable land.
A second calculation uses the community world bounds checked against the transform. Those coordinates run from -3750 to 4500 metres on the x-axis and -4400 to 8000 metres on the y-axis. The resulting box measures 8.25 by 12.4 km, or 102.3 km².
Neither number is presented as GTA 5's playable area. Both describe rectangles drawn around different definitions of the map, which is exactly why an area figure becomes unreliable when the boundary itself hasn't been defined.
"Map size" can refer to several different measurements. It may mean playable land, land and water inside an accepted boundary, or the rectangular image containing the map. The comparison table keeps those categories separate, and entries without a known land-water split are identified accordingly.
Square kilometres are converted to square miles using 0.386102 square miles per km², then rounded to two decimal places from the kilometre figure. Ratios use one decimal place in prose and two in the table.
Source labels also describe how each number was obtained. "Official" means Rockstar stated it. "Derived" covers a calculation made from cited inputs with the formula available. "Community-reported" identifies an outside measurement from a named source that hasn't been independently confirmed. "Datamined" is reserved for values taken directly from game files.
Several uncertainties are deliberately left unresolved. The page doesn't choose between the two competing GTA 6 community measurements, doesn't turn Rockstar's RDR2 comparison into a square-kilometre estimate, and doesn't assume whether Rockstar's 2x GTA 5 claim refers to land or the full mapped area. The available evidence doesn't settle any of those three points.
