The Cougar is Puma concolor, known in Florida specifically as the Florida panther, the region's only large native cat and its top land predator. It is a solitary, tawny-coated hunter that needs a lot of ground to range across. Real Florida panthers are critically endangered, with a small population confined to the swamps and forests of the southern part of the state, and vehicle strikes remain one of the biggest threats to their survival. Leonida's wilder backcountry, away from the roads and the coast, is the natural fit for an animal this rare and this dependent on undisturbed ground. Official trailer footage puts it in the game beyond question. Rockstar has not shown how it reacts if a player gets close, so any idea of an attack or a chase is guesswork.
