Overview

The Cane Toad is Rhinella marina, a large toad from Central and South America that is now an invasive species across South Florida. It was brought in during the 20th century to eat pests in sugar cane fields and spread from there. Glands behind its head carry a toxin strong enough to kill a dog that bites one, which is why Floridians are told to keep pets away from them.

Rockstar named cane toads among the invasive species living in Leonida when it briefed Game Informer for the September 2026 GTA 6 cover story, alongside green iguanas and rhesus macaques. Animals brought in by people and gone wild are part of everyday Florida, so they suit the game's take on the state.
