Overview

The Rhesus Macaque is Macaca mulatta, a monkey native to South and Southeast Asia. Florida has a real wild colony along the Silver River in the middle of the state, descended from a handful of monkeys released in the 1930s to draw tourists to a jungle boat ride. The group has grown and spread well beyond its starting point, and state wildlife officers treat it as an invasive species. Some of the monkeys carry a herpes virus that can be dangerous to people.

Rockstar listed rhesus macaques among Leonida's invasive species in the September 2026 Game Informer cover story. It is the kind of strange but true Florida detail the series likes to work into its maps.

Where the monkeys live in Leonida and how they react to the player are unknown.
