In your first GTA Online session, finish the onboarding, enter an invite-only session, complete a no-property activity, and set an income-property savings goal. Do not spend the starting balance on a supercar. Career Builder is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC Enhanced with a GTA$4 million startup allocation.

That GTA$4 million is not unrestricted cash. Career Builder requires you to select startup assets and lets you bring no more than GTA$1 million of the original allocation into Online.

Warning: Career Builder is a one-time allocation on supported editions. Do not confirm the character until the business, vehicle, weapon, and remaining cash fit the route you actually want to play.

Your first 60 minutes

  1. Finish the required character and tutorial flow. Do not skip an instruction screen you have not read, especially when it explains a one-time Career Builder choice.
  2. Move to a low-risk session. From the pause menu, use Online > Find New Session > Invite Only Session. Confirm this path on the publication platform.
  3. Open the Interaction Menu and find inventory items. Learn where snacks, armour, vehicle access, and passive mode controls are before starting a difficult activity.
  4. Bank loose cash. Use the Maze Bank website on the in-game phone if an activity pays cash on hand.
  5. Complete a no-property activity. The Cluckin' Bell Farm Raid is a current solo route with no setup fee or property requirement. Its finale pays GTA$400,000 after TU 1.73, but it has a setup chain.
  6. Set the first savings target. Use the money-goal calculator for the GTA$750,000 Acid Lab setup figure or the GTA$2.2 million Kosatka.
  7. Buy only what makes the route safer or faster. Keep a reserve for ammunition, armour, and mission failures.

Career Builder: which path should a beginner choose?

Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC Enhanced only.

Rockstar's current Career Builder support page lists four paths:

  • Executive
  • Gunrunner
  • Nightclub Owner
  • Biker

Each path uses the GTA$4 million allocation for a business, vehicle, and weapon package. You can carry at most GTA$1 million from that allocation into the game, so at least GTA$3 million must be committed through the builder. The feature and allocation can be used only once.

Our default recommendation: Gunrunner

Gunrunner is the draft recommendation for a player who wants one production business that can remain useful after the first week. The Bunker has a GTA$1.165 million starting buy-in and an estimated GTA$55,000-per-hour default in GTATracker's planner, but that rate is a community estimate, not a promise. Location, upgrades, supplies, sale size, and successful delivery all change the return.

Nightclub Owner can be a good long-term choice, but the warehouse is strongest after you own compatible feeder businesses. Biker opens several production routes, though they add supply and sale management. Executive is a direct active-work route for a player who prefers sourcing and selling cargo.

If you do not have Career Builder

PS4, Xbox One, and PC Legacy do not receive the Career Builder flow. Start with free or no-property activities, save the rewards, and avoid using an apartment or cosmetic purchase as an income plan.

A practical sequence is:

  1. Run Cluckin' Bell or another current no-property activity.
  2. Save GTA$750,000 for the Acid Lab setup route if you want production.
  3. Save GTA$2.2 million for the Kosatka if you want to learn Cayo Perico.
  4. Add an Agency or Auto Shop later if you prefer contract variety.

Read the full GTA Online money guide before choosing between those routes.

If you are returning to an old character

Do not delete a character just to see Career Builder. Rockstar states that the feature and startup allocation can only be experienced once. First inventory the properties, vehicles, weapons, and businesses already on the account.

Use the business calculator to identify what can already produce income. Check the progression tool for unlocked services and gear. An older account may be one upgrade away from a working route, which is cheaper than rebuilding around a new starter package.

PC Legacy and PC Enhanced players also need to make sure friends use the same version. Rockstar states that the two PC populations are separate.

What to buy first

Snacks and armour

Carry healing items and the best armour currently unlocked. The rank dataset records Super Light Armor at rank 5, Light Armor at rank 10, Standard Armor at rank 15, Heavy Armor at rank 20, and Super Heavy Armor at rank 25.

Inventory capacity also rises with rank, but two early armour-capacity rows in the dataset rely on a single source. Verify the displayed capacity in game rather than publishing those rows as settled facts.

GTA 5 heists

A practical weapon

The Pistol is available at rank 1. The Micro SMG unlocks at rank 5 and can cover an early drive-by role. The Pump Shotgun unlocks at rank 17, Sticky Bombs at rank 19, and the Assault Rifle at rank 24.

Several update-added weapons are available from rank 1, but availability does not make a high price sensible for a new account. Compare exact weapon costs and stats in the GTA 5 weapon database.

A useful vehicle

Prioritise mission access, seats, and protection over maximum top speed. The Armored Kuruma is a common PvE choice because its cabin protection can reduce NPC gunfire risk. The database price is GTA$698,250 before any discount condition.

Do not buy it if that purchase delays the first income property and your current activities already supply a usable vehicle. Check the vehicle database and compare the full acquisition price, not only a trade-price card.

Your first income purchase

Choose by preferred work:

You prefer

First target

Stored starting figure

Important caveat

Production while doing other work

Acid Lab

GTA$750,000

Prerequisite missions and upgrades affect the real route

Solo heist setup and stealth

Kosatka

GTA$2,200,000

Cayo has variable loot and a solo cooldown

Contract variety

Auto Shop

GTA$1,670,000

Default hourly return is only an estimate

Longer contract chain

Agency

GTA$2,010,000

Higher initial buy-in

Purchases to defer

Defer supercars, aircraft, cosmetic property upgrades, luxury apartments beyond a specific heist need, and large weapon collections. Each purchase should either enable income, protect the current route, or save enough time to justify delaying the next business.

Tip: Keep an operating reserve after every large purchase. A property that leaves no cash for armour, ammunition, supplies, and failed attempts can slow progression even when the purchase itself is sound.

Early ranks that matter

The progression dataset contains 202 unlock records. These are the useful early milestones, not a complete dump:

Rank

Why it matters

3

Los Santos Customs access

Repairs, resprays, and vehicle basics

5

Safehouses, garages, Mechanic, Micro SMG

21

Lester remove-wanted-level service

25

Super Heavy Armor

Best shop armour tier in this early set

Two Lester service rows at ranks 15 and 25 are flagged as single-source in the dataset and are omitted here. Use the full rank progression tool for all verified and uncertain entries.

How to make early money without wasting it

Keep active and passive income separate in your head. A finale payout is not an hourly rate unless setup time is included. A business rate is not guaranteed unless supplies, upgrades, sale success, and waiting time match the assumptions.

For a solo first week:

  1. Use Cluckin' Bell to build the opening balance.
  2. Add the Acid Lab route or continue saving for the Kosatka.
  3. Run active work while product is being made.
  4. Learn Cayo Perico solo only after the Kosatka purchase is affordable with operating cash left over.
  5. Review weekly Rockstar bonuses before repeating a lower-paying activity.

For a crew, joining a host's heist can avoid the host property cost. Agree on the cut before the finale and do not confuse the gross take with your personal payout.

Can beginners progress in an invite-only session?

Yes, much of the modern GTA Online progression loop can be run in private sessions. Rockstar expanded business activities, including sell missions, to private sessions with The Criminal Enterprises. A public session may offer a demand bonus for eligible sales, but it also adds interference risk.

Use invite-only sessions while learning setup paths or selling stock you do not want to expose to other players. Check the activity's launch prompt because competitive modes and some jobs still move players into their own matchmaking flow.

Info: Private sessions reduce player interference, but they can also remove an eligible public-session demand bonus. Choose safety or bonus deliberately rather than treating either session type as universally better.

Avoid losing time and cash

  • Insure and track the personal vehicle through the normal ownership flow.
  • Check whether a displayed vehicle price is a base price, trade price, conversion price, or upgrade component.
  • Do not use money glitches, account sales, boosting services, or credential-sharing offers.
  • Do not carry a full business stock level into an unfamiliar sale without checking vehicle count and session risk.
  • Keep operating cash after a property purchase.
  • Record the next savings target before browsing vehicle stores.

Your first-week plan

The useful sequence is milestone-based rather than day-based:

  • First milestone: a safe session routine, banked cash, snacks, armour, and one practical weapon
  • Second milestone: a repeatable no-property activity and a GTA$750,000 or GTA$2.2 million savings target
  • Third milestone: one income-producing asset with its required upgrades understood
  • Fourth milestone: active work to run during production or cooldowns
  • Fifth milestone: utility purchases that shorten the route, followed by discretionary cars

If a route feels tedious, change the route. A lower theoretical return that you complete regularly is more useful than a high planner estimate attached to content you avoid.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should a GTA Online beginner do first?+

Finish onboarding, move to an invite-only session, complete a no-property activity, and save for the first income asset. Do not spend the initial balance on a performance car.

Which Career Builder path is best?+

Gunrunner is our provisional default because a Bunker can remain useful in a mixed active and production route. The final recommendation needs a current recorded check of the offered properties, vehicles, and weapons.

What rank unlocks useful early gear?+

Rank 5 opens the Micro SMG, Mechanic, garages, and safehouses. Rank 20 adds Heavy Armor and bulletproof tyres. Rank 25 unlocks Super Heavy Armor.

Can I make progress in an invite-only session?+

Yes. Many business and sale activities can run in private sessions. Public-session bonuses and risk remain separate choices.
